United States. We were
educating students 34 years
before the Declaration of
Independence was signed.
Education for all was a central tenant of Moravian In 1858, the Moravian Theological Seminary moves from
beliefs. In 1742 the 16-year-old Countess Nazareth to the former Nisky Hill Seminary, a.k.a. Van Kirk’s
Benigna von Zinzendorf creates a school for girls. Academy, on East Church Street in Bethlehem. The curriculum is

The ?rst school to educate women. For the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Moravian College, alumnae Dorothy
Hess Galloway, Pearl Prant, Hellen Heller, Katherine Adams, Pearl Frantz and
Mildred Dubert Kistler dress in traditional Moravian women’s clothing.
