Gone are the days when wedding gowns were a sea of
flowing white. Brides these days aren’t shy in wearing
color and are incorporating lace into the gowns.
“There’s really hardly any white gowns anymore,” says Vicki
Klotz, owner of VK Bridal Couture in Walnutport. Brides instead
are favoring ivory, light gold, blush and other pale colors — even
in underskirts with overlays of lace.
Brides are also looking to make their gowns
personalized, adding details and accessories like sleeves,
buttons, belts and bows.
“A big trend now is to incorporate something sentimental,
something their Mom or close relative wore on her wedding day,”
says Susan Kolar, owner of Susan Kolar Couture in Easton. Her
clients are also asking for restyling of their mothers’ dresses, as
well as tea-length ’50s styles with lace, sheer yokes and sleeves.

Lace, particularly with nature motifs, is also a popular choice.
Kolar says brides are showing interest in asymmetrical designs with
vines and three dimensional flowers.
Illusion backs and necklines — using sheer fabric with lace
atop it, form-fitting silhouettes and ball gowns with layers of soft
netting and lace bodies are also popular.
“They’re all so different,” Klotz says. “It’s really what the bride is
looking for — there’s such a variety out there.”
When shopping for gowns, here are some things to keep
in mind:
n Know what to highlight and what to cover up. Try on gowns
that play up your best features. Many gowns can be modified.
n Get sized correctly. Bridal gown sizes do not coincide with
street sizes. Brides should go by their measurements. Attempting
to squeeze into a dress that is too small will only lead to discomfort.
n Purchase the right undergarments. Improperly fitting
bras, shape wear and other undergarments can lead to
discomfort as well.
n Move around in the gown. Brides should not just stand in
front of the mirror and smile when trying on gowns. Put them
through their paces. Try sitting, bending and even a little dancing.
Make sure the dress is comfortable to move around in.
n Explore different styles and materials. Choose cooler,
breezier fabrics and lightweight gowns, like crêpe, georgette or
organza, for summer weddings. Heavier fabrics, such as brocade,
may be more comfortable in the winter.
