HEELS OVER HEADS
Kids who love bounce castles grow up to be adults
who love the Acrobag, coming to Big Bear at Masthope
Mountain at the end of the month. The Acrobag is a
giant, sturdy, air-filled cushion over which people try
flips and turns with the promise of a soft landing.
“The bag allows people to receive some coaching
on how to accomplish a specific maneuver in the
air,” says Ladora “Lori” Phillips, a spokeswoman
for Recreation Management Corp., Ski Big
Bear at Masthope Mountain, Lackawaxen.
Everyone starts with a straight jump to get a feel for
it — on skis, snowboards or tubes — and they progress
from easy tricks to harder ones. In the Acrobag event
debut last year, music pumped from speakers and
people waiting in line shouted their encouragement,
so the participants were pumped, too. This is serious
fun — a helmet and liability waiver are required.

At Crystal Cabin Fever in Lakeville, Wayne County, the
annual ice garden of Sculpted Ice Works Inc., the popular
50-foot ice slide has a pirate theme this year. (It’s best
traversed on snow pants, but the folks at Cabin Fever
will lend you a mat to slide on if needed.) The slide is
the centerpiece of an elaborate display of crowd favorites
from the past 10 years, including a towering likeness
of the Coliseum that glows in the floodlights, a Wild
West town and saloon that sparkle, and dinosaurs that
delight. “The free wine tasting is popular,” says Kristen
Johnson, business manager, “as is the hot chocolate.”
