Durable tile flooring and wall tile have long been staples
in homes, but are coming back stronger than ever, with more
and more homeowners choosing tile over other surfaces such
as hardwood, fabrics and more. Tile can mimic the look of
these surfaces, or also look like natural stone. Large-format
tile is particularly popular at the moment, with “large format”
being defined as any tiles ranging from 12 x 24 inches to
larger than 40 x 120 inches.
“Pretty much all that is available in the marketplaces
these days is that format, especially in floor tile. While I
love a large format tile, often a square works better for
a patterned layout rather than a rectangle,” says Carrie
Oesmann, ASID, AKBD of Bailiwick Interior Design LLC of
Bethlehem. “The classic subway tile has been reinvented
into larger tiles of the same or similar proportions. I love to
use all of these variations, as they cross the line between
traditional and modern simply by changing their format to a
vertical orientation.”
